The double mediation through which Ibsen's text reaches us – from Norwegian adapted into German then surtitled (and therefore summarized) in French – in no way undermines their authority, founded on a limitless palette of nuances in voice, gaze, movements, or electrifying statics. At the head of the Schaubühne in Berlin, director Thomas Ostermeier has taken Ibsen's play, first performed in 1885, to update its period and text, in order to "dust it off a little and modernize the language."
